Movie: The Amazons directed by Terence Young (1973, Medieval)

This movie was also titled War Goddess. Lots of boobies in this one. You don’t want to miss the nudie catfight starting at 1 hour, 13 minutes. It’s the stuff dreams are made of.

The Amazons directed by Terence Young – (1973) 4 stars

Run time: 1 hour, 42 minutes. This movie had a lot going on in it, as in too many sub-plots competing for attention. In the end, it became a jumble where none of them really stood out and took center stage. What was this movie about? Basically, it focused on mini-dramas of love and betrayal. This is most obvious in the weak ending, where – spoiler alert – the Amazon queen falls for the Grecian king, despite that a massacre of her people just took place.

Why did I rate this movie 4 stars? By analyzing these mini-episodes separately, I saw some depth and intelligence in both the production and the acting. Why would a Grecian king pretend to be a second-string lieutenant? How did that give him an advantage? Wouldn’t it be better for an Amazon monarch to breed with other royal stock? That’s the kind of sub-plot that makes me think. Also, I saw a decent change of perspective in how the queen stubbornly changed her attitude toward men, and later when the queen finally fought her militant rival and they ended up as lovers. The movie was overshadowed by traces of comedy, but really there was a lot of tension going on and jockeying for position by many of the characters. The Amazon queen was gorgeous, and that nude catfight starting at 1:13:00 was amazing!
